Execution Report: Robert Carter

Continued from Page 1

At his execution, Robert Carter claimed full responsibility for the entire incident. "It was me and me alone. Anthony Graves had nothing to do with it. I lied on him in court. My wife had nothing to do with it. Anthony Graves don't even know anything about it. My wife don't know anything about it." He also expressed sorrow for the Davis family, love for his own family, and proclaimed his faith in Jesus Christ. He was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m.

Update: In 2006, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals vacated Anthony Graves' conviction and granted him a new trial, on the basis of exculpatory statements by Robert Carter that the prosecution suppressed at Graves' trial. While preparing for Graves' new trial, district attorney Bill Parham concluded that Graves was innocent and dismissed the charges against him. "He's an innocent man," Parham said. "There is nothing that connects Anthony Graves to this crime. I did what I did because that's the right thing to do." Graves was freed from prison on 27 October 2010.
